Overcoming Stereotypes

My Experience as a Mixed-Race Individual

I’m Jane, a mixed-race individual. My mom is a foreign spouse from the Philippines who has been living in Taiwan for over 25 years.

Throughout my life, I’ve faced the stereotypes and biases that Taiwanese society holds towards Southeast Asian foreign spouses. This often made me feel judged and different as I grew up.

In my quest to fit in and feel more like a Taiwanese, there was a time when I distanced myself from my mom and avoided her affection.

Looking back, I deeply regret that period and the way I treated my mom, but I truly disliked being ridiculed by my peers.

Unconditional Love

My Journey with My Supermom

My mom has always showered me with unconditional love and care. As I entered high school, I realized that family love is everlasting.

From then on, I stopped caring about what others thought and wholeheartedly embraced the love of my family, including my beloved Filipino mom.

My mom is not just my best friend; she’s a superhero mom.

Despite facing challenges and unfair treatment in Taiwan’s traditional society due to language and cultural differences, she never let the pressure affect us.

She always remains optimistic and positive, with a smile that never fades away.

Your Go-To Guide for a Fulfilling Life in Taiwan

As I grew up, I gradually realized the challenges foreign spouses face when living in Taiwan.

Therefore, from a young age, I’ve been willingly assisting my mom and other foreign friends in resolving issues.

However, I also understand that there are many others who need help, just like my mom, and my individual capacity is limited to provide one-on-one assistance to everyone.

That’s why I decided to start this English blog called “Mei Jan Chia,” where I share practical guides about living in Taiwan.

Although I’m still learning English, I hope this website can help individuals of different nationalities live a relaxed and happy life in Taiwan.

I hope my blog becomes your precious resource, making your life in Taiwan more vibrant and fulfilling.
